The answer is yes, you just need to know how to organise yourself. Bergamo is not only an artistic and cultural gem, it is also a tourist destination capable of striking, attracting and seducing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A city divided into two parts, two very different environments, but both with great charm. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/hotelparigi2.it\/en\/4492-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Upper Town<\/a><\/strong><\/span>is a village surrounded by mighty walls, built in Roman times and later rebuilt during the Middle Ages. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/en\/?p=4191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lower Town<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is a dynamic and lively area, full of interesting shops and offers, especially for young people and tourists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> We begin our visit of this city by starting with the most significant buildings in Bergamo Alta and then descending to the main places of interest in the more modern area. <strong>Let the walk begin!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Visit Bergamo in two days<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It starts from <strong>Old Square<\/strong>which was defined by the architect <strong>Le Corbusier\u00a0<\/strong>such as <i>'the most beautiful square in Europe'<\/i>. This area reached its splendour especially during Venetian rule. In this large square is <strong>the Palace of Reason<\/strong> of communal age and <strong>the Bell<\/strong>, a former civic tower whose bells toll a hundred times every evening at 10pm. In the past, the ringing of the bells warned the farmers of the closure of the gates in the city walls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is also where <strong>the Angelo Mai Civic Library<\/strong>which is located inside a beautiful 17th-century white marble palace, once the Town Hall. An elegant fountain stands in the centre of the square, <strong>the Contarini Fountain<\/strong>while picturesque bars and caf\u00e9s enliven the entire area.<\/span><\/p>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here is a beautiful aerial shot of the Upper Town:<\/span><\/strong>\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_MML3N0zKJE\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<strong> \u00a0<\/strong>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Citt\u00e0 Alta: the charm of the Middle Ages<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the small square near the <strong>Palace of Reason<\/strong> then lies the magnificent <strong>Cathedral<\/strong> inside which you can admire the Chapel of the Crucifix (originally from the 16th century) and an apse with paintings by great artists, such as <strong>the Tiepolo<\/strong>. Adjacent is another noteworthy religious building, viz. <strong>the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore<\/strong>Romanesque style and dating from the 22nd century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Inside is also the tomb of <a href=\"\/en\/?p=9133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gaetano Donizetti<\/span>,<\/a> composer and opera singer from Bergamo who lived in the first half of the 19th century, and his master <strong>Simon Mayr.<\/strong> <b>The Colleoni Chapel<\/b> and the confessional created by artist Andrea Fantoni are other reasons to visit this area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you plan to see Bergamo in two days, you absolutely cannot miss <b>Open Hill<\/b> and the St Alexander's Gate, where the Venetian coat of arms of the Lion of St Mark stands out. From here you can reach the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/en\/?p=11997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funicular<\/a><\/span> leading up to the <strong>San Vigilio Pass<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Also worth a visit <strong>the Gate of St Augustine<\/strong> and the deconsecrated church of the same name, now home to the Faculty of Humanities at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unibg.it\/ateneo\/sedi-universitarie\/santagostino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">University of Bergamo<\/span><\/a>. It is a 24th century building with a Gothic fa\u00e7ade and a decorated ceiling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_4013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4013\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelparigi2.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Bergamo-dautunno.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4013\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4013 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelparigi2.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Bergamo-dautunno.jpg\" alt=\"Bergamo in due giorni\" width=\"700\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Bergamo - a city rich in history and charm<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And finally, we recommend a stop at the <strong>Remembrance Park<\/strong> located on the Sant'Eufemia hill, the highest in Bergamo, and which stands near the 14th-century fortress. It is so called because many Bergamasks were shot by the Austrians for political offences during the 19th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Citt\u00e0 Bassa: Bergamo's nightlife<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moving towards <strong>Upper Town<\/strong>the panorama changes, and little by little the medieval atmosphere that is so characteristic is lost. That does not, however, diminish the city's charm. The visit begins at the <strong>Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie<\/strong> with the adjoining former convent, built by the Franciscans in the first half of the 15th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We continue through the propylaea of Porta Nuova until we reach Palazzo Frizzoni, the seat of the City Hall. The building dominates Piazza Matteotti where you can admire some important monuments such as the one dedicated to the <strong>Partisan by Giacomo Manz\u00f9<\/strong> and the statue of Cavour by Bistolfi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We then move on to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/en\/?p=4191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sentierone<\/strong><\/a><\/span>the picturesque street with boutiques and old palaces. Throughout the year, this street comes alive with festivals, fairs and stalls. Other notable destinations include the famous <a href=\"\/en\/?p=4513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Donizetti Theatre<\/strong><\/a>the War Memorial Tower in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and <strong>the Cloister of Santa Marta.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you are visiting Bergamo in two days, we finally recommend a walk in via <b>Borgo Pignolo.<\/b> This is an area of medieval origins where one can find incredible neoclassical buildings.
