'Ice cream is condensed happiness' - Jessie Lane Adams, American poet
Summer is just around the corner and it is time to take a break with a nice ice cream refreshing. From artisanal to packaged ice cream, from cone to cup; today we are lucky enough to taste many varieties of flavours. Cream, chocolate, fruit, pistachio... the list could go on and on! But there is one flavour in particular that we cannot say no to: stracciatella.
Stracciatella - the ice cream of Bergamo origins
Not everyone knows this, but stracciatella-flavoured ice cream has Bergamo origins. In the 1950s, Enrico Panattoni, a hawker from Lucca, together with his wife Oriana, originally from Pistoia, decided to move to Bergamo to expand their business activities. The two began to dedicate themselves catering and baking in one of the city's most famous restaurants: The Marianne.
Panattoni was an expert in the production of castagnaccio, a dessert typical of its areas of origin. His aim was to find a combination between Bergamo and Tuscan dishes. Success came in 1953 when Panattoni had an idea.
Customers at his restaurant used to ask for as a dish stracciatellaRoman-style soup with beaten eggs. Tired of the monotony of that dish, Panattoni decided to repropose it in a sweet version: fiordilatte ice cream with small slivers of dark chocolate. A real treat for the palate!
This is how one of the favourite ice creams of Italians and the world came into being. Bergamoproud of this primacy, is its cradle. The Panattoni family still holds the recipe for stracciatella as one of its most precious treasures.
The ice-cream flavour stracciatellawhether artisanal or packaged, can be found anywhere in the world. Over time, master ice-cream makers have come up with different variations such as one with mint chocolate chunks, but no dice. If you want to taste the original stracciatella, you must drop by the La Marianna ice-cream parlour in Colle Aperto.
Once you have tasted this delicacy, you will realise that there is only one real stracciatella!
