World Gratitude Day: why saying thank you is good for your health

In a few days it will be the World Gratitude Daythe World Day of Gratitude, and we are looking forward to celebrating it properly! Perhaps not everyone is familiar with this precious holiday, which was established in Hawaii on 21 September back in 1965. Decades later, however, its presence in the calendar continues to remind us of the importance of appreciating life and the world in which we live. Isn't that a good reason to be in a good mood?

World Gratitude Day: why being grateful makes us feel good

As we have seen, the World Gratitude Day was created with the aim of helping people to show their gratitude to others. In an increasingly hectic and computerised society, we do not always find time to express our feelings and share our reflections. We often overlook all the beauty that surrounds us and all the people who have been at our sideespecially in times of difficulty. When the difficulty ends or is overcome, it is much easier to return to the usual routine rather than carve out small moments to dedicate to those who love us.

True, being grateful makes us feel good, but not only from a communicative and interactional point of view. Several studies show that feeling gratitude increases a sense of optimism, personal satisfaction, joy and enthusiasm. For example, research conducted by two US psychologistsDr. Robert A. Emmons, University of California, and Dr. Michael E. McCullough, University of Miami, demonstrated how awareness of gratitude enhances positive feelings. During this study, people who were asked to write down each week what they should feel grateful for showed increased mental well-being than those who had to describe everyday frustrations. In short, gratitude contributes to banish negativity and decrease anxiety and stress levels.

World Gratitude Day: give wellbeing to a special person

It will now be clearer to you why World Gratitude Day is so important, but you may have been left with a small doubt: is it possible to train the ability to be grateful to others? The answer is simple: yes, of course! And we can also give you some advice on this:

  1. When faced with a problem, do not look only at the negative aspects of the situation, but also focused on the positive ones. Be careful, though, they are often the hardest to catch!
  2. Every day or week make a list of things you should be grateful forfriends, family, partner, study, work success...
  3. Focus on the present without letting the future nag at you too much. Think about the 'here and now' and become aware of luck you have at this precise moment in your life.

By doing so, you will not only make others happy but also yourself!
